#14: -- Superstar in Stereo
Title: A lyric by Sloan from the song "Lemonzinger"
People: Sloan, non surprisingly
Stuff that was hard: getting it to display the top star bar correctly in Firefox.
Comments: I love Sloan. I'll be seeing them again next month, too! Yay! Anyway, this layout may be the first one that turned out exactly how I originally put together the mock-up in Photoshop (at least in Safari). I'd also say it looks equally good in 800x600 and 1024x781 or whatever the larger res is. Larger than that and it might look about wierd again, but what can you do? Anyway, I currently love it.
Image from Sloan's website, used without permission. I do own all their albums and the video collection, though. Sloan rules.
Star brush credit.
#13 -- Nightlife
Title: It just sounded cool.
Color Scheme: Dark purple, light pink, black
Characters: None, just an image of New York in the '77 blackout
Stuf that was hard: More than I'd care to admit. I didn't want this to be a frames layout, but it wouldn't align, and then the CSS box had issues, and whine whine whine.
Comments: I do like the way this turned out, but it sucks I couldn't get it the way I originally wanted (no frames). Once again, all my content is shunted into a small box; it looks better on bigger resolutions, but meh. How long this one lasts will depend on how long it takes me to think of another one.
I got the image off a Google images search; it's used without permission, but was taken by Allan Tannenbaum, and I'm makig no profit off it.
#12 -- Take Me Out To the Ballgame
Title: Um... The song?
Color Scheme: Green and, um, green.
Characters: No characters, real life person is Derek Jeter
Stuff that was hard: the semi-transparent .gif
Comments: IE is confused by it, but it doesn't look terrible. It's my first layout to not picture one of my own characters, which is odd. The domain has grown up some. (Image of Jeter from derek-jeter.org.
#11 -- Sand Castle On A Cloud
Title: It's the name of the castle.
Color Scheme: Blue and grey.
Characters: None, except the castle from The Groovy Book, as drawn by Noelle.
Stuff that was hard: learning CSS. But I'm ohsoglad I know it.
Comments: Very clean, simple and plain, also done entirely in CSS as an experiment. I liked it. It was my longest lasting layout, due partially to how much I liked it and partially to laziness and lack of time to redesign.
#10 -- Fierce Words
Title: Um... Islana is fierce looking. And there's a lot of writing on the domain. I don't know; it sounded cool.
Color Scheme: blueish purpleish
Characters: Islana from the Saga season 2, as drawn by Vera.
Stuff that was hard: nothing. I decided it was time for something super-simple.
Comments: Very clean; hopefully not too bad in smaller resolutions. Very simple, and it was about time I did something that wasn't a six by ten frameset or whatever the last one was....
#9 -- "True Love Waits"
Title: It's a reference to the Saga Season Two
Color Scheme: Orange, yellow and red
Characters: Serissa, as she appears in Season Two, as drawn by Nic
Stuff that was hard: the @#%!!! frameset, getting the image to (mostly) line up
Comments: I'm still annoyed that there was a tiny glitch where it didn't line up, but otherwise I was pretty happy with it. I think it's nice and classy, just like the character of Riss. Also, the Saga had never had a layout before, which is hardly fair, as it is the cornerstone project of the domain.
#8 -- "..and they lived happily ever after. The end."
Title: The end of a story. Not any story in specific, mind you. Just, y'know, in general.
Color scheme: rainbow-y background, purple text, pink links
Characters: Queen Itsy and King George, from The Groovy Book; art (once again) by Noelle
Stuff that was hard: finding a size that would look decent in all resolutions
Comments: This one was pretty close to what I had wanted with the dark rainbow thing way back in layout number two. I like it in general, though I do wish the window with text was a bit bigger... But it was either that or have it not work in any small or medium sized browsers.
#7 -- Killer Queen
splash
Title: A song by Queen.
Color scheme: purple and blue on white
Characters: Queen Itsy, a picture that Nic did for me for my birthday
Stuff That Was Hard: um... nothing.
Comments: Pretty. Classy. Worked in all resolutions, unlike the one before it. Thus, I liked it. Of course, there was no apostrophe in the font I used, so that's stolen from a different font, which is why it looks awkward on the splash.
#6 -- "...and then, stuff blows up."
splash
Title: A quote from pretty much any of the Lads stories (a now discontinued project).
Color scheme: browns and red, I guess
Characters: SD versions Jasper Tulsi, Calvin Ledbetter, Eric Donelly and Felix Ashkay from the Lads, as drawn by Nic
Stuff That Was Hard: um... Nothing, really. The frameset took awhile to get right in Netscape, but that was all.
Comments: I figured it was only fair to do a Lads layout, after having two in a row of LolRock. And I just got an idea, so I went with it. It didn't look so good on smaller resolutions, so I felt bad about that. Sorry. And I guess I wish the text frame had more space, but other than that, it was nice.
#5 -- LolRock
splash 1 and splash 2
Title: the name of a fictional band and album, also from the Lads
Color scheme: shades of blue
Characters: LolRock (again); so that's still Genevieve Atwood, Greta Stein and Jolene Halifax from The Lads. And as always, the picture is by Art Goddess Nic
Stuff That Was Hard: the mouseover on the splash page; making the background (because I was Adobe illiterate), converting the font (Floralies) from PC to Mac files.
Comments: I loved this layout. The album cover pic was a present from Nic, and screamed layout material at me. And of course, then I had to make the album's liner notes (also with pictures Nic had given me.) I really adored this color scheme and liked this layout a lot, so it was up for awhile.
#4 -- "Only pop music can save us now!"
Title: a quote from The Young Ones
Color scheme: citrus fruit inspired
Characters: Genevieve Atwood, Greta Stein and Jolene Halifax from The Lads -- a fictional popband called LolRock. The picture is by the amazing Nic.
Stuff That Was Hard: all the damn mouseovers on the main page. You'd think cut'n'paste would make that easier, but nooooooo....
Comments: I never liked it that much, so it didn't last too long. I only created it to kill time during a study hall, shortly after I got my first laptop.
#3 -- "Those freaks!"
Title: description of the characters
Color scheme: rainbow-y, leaning towards pink
Characters: (top to bottom) Queen Itsy, Polly, Jessie, Jack the SPAM Knight, King George, and Sir Paul from the Groovy Book. Art by Noelle, who doesn't need her ego fed as she's protected by her Zaphod bubble.
Stuff that was hard: uh... nothing I can think of off the top of my head
Comments: It was a nice clean layout; much better than the ones directly before or after it. It was my best early layout, I think.
#2 -- "The Rainbow Connection" (no picture)
Title: quote from The Rainbow Connection
Description: a big rainbow arching over the top and around the left of the screen with text under it in the left corner and an imagemap going up it
Color Scheme: um... a big rainbow on a black backgroud
Characters: none
Stuff That Was Hard: The frames . And making the rainbow arch like I wanted it to, as I didn't know how to use Photoshop too well.
Comments: The frames were probably messed up in some people's browsers, the text was shoved into a tiny box and it didn't look a thing like I wanted it to. I was very proud of it, because it was experimental and took me awhile, but it actually wasn't too attractive.
#1 -- "Queen Itsy's Collective" (no picture)
Title: self-explanitory
Description: a blue background (it became purple flowers after a week or so) with a big white table in the middle of everything; a column of text, a column with a picture of Itsy, a column of text
Color Scheme: purple, blue and white
Characters: Queen Itsy (art by Noelle, natch)
Stuff That Was Hard: nothing at all
Comments: my most basic layout, I started planning it before I even had the domain. It was very, very simple and boring, but at least it wasn't ugly.
Back.
